Quick weekend post

One day of raiding. Got to Rag but couldn’t take him down.

Also worked on Chillshot, whose gear is really coming along.

Also played some Champions Online, which had a really fun Halloween thing going on.  DC Online is going free to play soon, that should be worth trying.

Another Day

Another Headless/Firelands day in WoW.

I’m still liking CO, the whole super hero thing is fun. But it feels a little hollow without Pants on Head around.

Champions Arise

Ran Headless Horseman and Firelands dailies with the guildies.

Also did a fair bit of Champions Online. Got my mind toon, Domino, to level 17. The leveling is quite slow. Still fun though. Just ran the five-part (feels like five comic issues) dungeon known as Aftershock. I’m not sure if a non-self-healing toon could solo it. Fairly tough, and the boss fights are brutal. Plus the enemies level up as you do, so you can’t outlevel it.  Very clever of them to have the dungeon scale both with party size and with level.

Did the usual on Warmheart.

Also dropped my soldier toon on Champions; trying a Behemoth type named Swat.  The other toons were both ranged, so I thought I’d try another melee toon. I say another because I briefly tried a Blade archetype toon.

Mining the Mind

Ran more Headless Horsemen, no mounts. Also did typical Warmheart Firelands dailies and random, all with the guildies.

Then did Champions Online. I started with me and my son. I was on my Mind character Domino, and he was on his Blade toon. Soon we were joined by the Pants on Head member Bugger. He had a Grumoire toon. We were soon tearing things up.

Still, Mind toons are squishy.  She died a lot, partly because when you are grouping the bad guys go and get help, and with her AOE she gets lots of threat  However, at the end of the night she dinged 11. That meant another ability, her first (only?) healing ability. That should help her survivability greatly.

Early Thoughts on Ranged Tanking

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , on October 19, 2011 by callmechill

Ran Headless Horseman on a few toons last night. Took Warm through Firelands again.

Not much other play time. But did get Chillout on Champions Online to level 12 and had fun doing it. He is quite tough, yet does decent damage. Soloing the whole time, I think I only died when I strayed into high-level territory.

As to the whole SWTOR vs Chillout ranged tanking, it could be really fun. I would sometimes use cover to block attacks from strong ranged enemies or kite strong melee. All while damaging them with dots.

To be fair I think the whole Glacier archetype may have more slows and holds than a SWTOR Trooper tank. Not having played SWTOR yet it is hard to tell.

Super Cold

Ran a ZA on Warmheart with the guildies last night. Also finished one of the three 125 mark Firelands dailies quests.

Also ran my glacier toon, Chillout, on Champions Online. Went from level 7 to 11. Basically a ranged tank, it is giving me some interesting ideas of what to expect from ranged tanking in SWTOR.

There will be major differences, I am sure. For one thing, glacier types are all about CC in CO, and I’m not sure that’s true in SWTOR from what I’ve seen released. But running and gunning is fun.

Chillout just made his first power choice, and I took Snow Storm rather than Frost Breath. Firstly I tried both, and researched both. The tanking differences seemed minor. But the storm seems to be more useful, and more interesting. Also I’ve never been a huge cone power fan. Finally my toon is science-based, and Frost Breath’s animation clearly is a breathing from his non-super-powered face.

Paranoid victory lap; enjoying Champions Online

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , on October 17, 2011 by callmechill

Paranoid took out all of Firelands this weekend.  We did Rag in two tries. Excellent.

After that we had quite a bit of time. We had done BH already, do we did Sarth three drakes, and then Narf. On heroic that is a semi-tricky fight still.

Also this weekend my son and I started playing Champions Online. We have both decided we like it better than City of Heroes, and will play this instead.

This is a good time to play CO; not only is it free to play, but they are giving a free character slot if you play any time the next week or so.

I have all my character slots filled. I have a spylike Soldier called Agent Frost; a Mind toon called Domino; and a Glacier called Chillout.

The Glacier type interests me in part because it is a ranged tank. This is new to me, and it is much like my anticipated main toon for SWTOR, the Trooper. Though the games are hardly identical I think it will be interesting to see how it works.p
